Fireman comes out of coma after 10 years

New York, May 26th, 2005 (ACPress.net).
A fireman has come out of a coma after 10 years and asked after his wife and family. When his wife arrived at the residential care home where her husband had been for 7 years, they talked non-stop for 14 hours, before the man fell asleep for a further 30 hours.

Donald Herbert was 34 when injured by a roof collapsing as he tried to put out a house fire in Buffalo, USA. He was buried under the rubble for several minutes and when pulled free, was unconscious. After a couple of months, he passed into a comatose state and remained so until the other day when, to the amazement of doctors, he suddenly spoke and said he wanted to talk to his family. No one is able to explain the phenomenon, but his family are obviously delighted.

When his family arrived, including his four children, Herbert asked how long he had been ‘away’. They told him 10 years, whereas he thought he had only been in a coma for 3 months. His youngest son was just 3 years old at the time of the accident; now his father has to get to know a 13-year-old boy. Herbert now faces a long recovery period; he has difficulty walking, is very thin, and is struggling to come to terms with his new situation, but doctors are positive that he will get better.

Doctors admit they have no explanation for such recoveries, though there are a few precedents. A road accident victim, also in the USA, came out of a semi-vegetative state in 2003 after 19 years, and now lives without any negative consequences.

Pentecostalism defined as a religion for the poor

Athens, May 26th, 2005 (ACPress.net).
At a mission conference in Athens, the Korean theologian Wonsuk Ma, defined Pentecostalism as a “religion of the poor” but not a “religion for the poor”. He said the movement appealed to people who were outcasts from society, and even from other churches. The Holy Spirit brought power to people who otherwise had none. However, Ma added that as the new group on the scene, Pentecostal and charismatic churches had much to learn from the older, historic churches, but were a powerful reminder from God of the importance of carrying out the task of world mission.

Leading Latin singer turns to Christ

San Juan, Puerto Rico. May 26th, 2005 (ACPress.net).

Elvis Crespo, one of the best-known ‘merengue’ singers in Latin America who has sold more than 5 million records, has given his life to Jesus Christ. His life to date has been an odyssey of relationships and illegitimate children which has filled the gossip magazines, but has now been converted. He is now trying to put his life in order, and attends an Evangelical Church with his wife, Ana Cerutto, and takes advice from his pastor. He reads his Bible and says that for some time he had been searching for a new, spiritual life. One immediate change is that he no longer sings two of his hits, ‘Beer’ and ‘Bandit’, because of their lyrics.

10,000 pray for end to violence in Peru

Lima, May 26th, 2005 (ACPress.net).
More than 10,000 people met in the National Stadium in the Peruvian capital to ask God for an end to violence and poverty, and for family unity and understanding between different ethnic groups in Peru. Celebrating the 16th anniversary of the founding of the National Prayer Movement, the event was attended by the Leader of Parliament, Antero Flores, and the 84-year-old evangelist who inspired the Movement, Paul Finkenbinder, better known as ‘Brother Paul’. There was music, prayer and calls by a group of children for an end to abuse and violence against children in Peru. Brother Paul called for repentance and a commitment to pray unceasingly for the nation of Peru.
