Billy Graham’s New York swansong

New York, July 9th, 2005 (ACPress.net).
Billy Graham, the American evangelist, has preached to more than 200 million people in 185 countries. It is a dangerous game to suggest which might be his last campaign, but after nearly 6 decades of preaching, Graham led a mission in New York in what some see as possibly his last.

Graham is 86 and suffering from prostate cancer, yet drew thousands to Flushing Meadow in New York to listen to his message - the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Graham has preached to a greater worldwide audience than the late Pope, John Paul II. The modern evangelical renaissance in the USA has been attributed to Graham, and it is no coincidence that his swansong took place in New York. Back in 1957, the city was host to a Graham mission, held on that occasion in Madison Square Garden. The mission was due to last 6 weeks but proved so popular, that it carried on for almost four months.

Much of Graham’s enduring popularity is down to his avoidance of the sexual and financial scandals which have blighted other evangelists who have used the television to spread their message. He is also known as the ‘Presidents’ preacher’, having had contact with all the major political figures in America over the last half-century. The current President, George Bush, who had problems with alcohol in his youth, says he was converted under Graham, and owes to him his love of reading the Bible. Yet Graham has also managed not to become embroiled in politics, and has remained a Gospel preacher.

Protestant centre to be built on shores of Galilee

Tel Aviv, July 9th, 2005 (ACPress.net).
The Israeli government has announced plans to build a large, Protestant centre on the banks of the Sea of Galilee, recognising that worldwide “there are millions of faithful evangelical Christians who would be interested in the construction of an international centre like this one.”

One of the factors behind the project is the million or so Protestant tourists who visit Israel each year. Finance Minister Benjamín Netanyahu has said that the centre will be built on a 35-acre site given by the government for the purpose. The project also includes related infrastructure including roads, phone lines and an airport. Where will the money come from? Perhaps ‘the millions of interested evangelical Christians’ around the world who would like to see such a centre built.

Catholic Church considers artificial insemination immoral

Rome, July 9th, 2005 (ACPress.net).
The Catholic Church, according to the Italian press, has reiterated its belief in the protection of the embryo, considers artificial insemination immoral, and believes in civil disobedience when laws go against moral considerations. These views are expected to be included in a revised Catechism, although they do not vary much from current dogma.

In question-and-answer format, the Catechism underlines that the State should protect embryos, due to the inalienable right of unborn human beings from the moment of conception. It believes artificial fertilisation or insemination to be immoral, as it separates procreation from the act in which a married couple give themselves to each other. As for conscientious objection, the text says a citizen should not obey the law if they go against moral teaching, ie. Christian ethics. The text was put together by the current Pope, at the request of the last one, John Paul II.

Electronic rosary hits Catholic pockets

Barcelona, July 14th, 2005 (ACPress.net).
Two Catalan inventors have come up with a pocket, electronic rosary to try and encourage more Catholics to use them in prayer, especially the young.

Jaume Clavé and Joan Figueras, the designers of the electronic rosary, say “we notice that our invention is popular with young people because of its contrast with such an ancient item as the rosary.” The invention is like a keyring with a picture of John Paul II on one side, and the inscription "Rosarium Virginis Mariae". It is designed to pay homage to him for what he did for the rosary. Quite.

It has a push-button which allows the user to keep count of his prayers. Press it after each ‘avemaria’ and it vibrates. The end of each cycle of prayers is indicated by a greater vibration. One feels if they actually prayed to God, the earth might shake. The electronic rosary indicates when someone has got to the end of the ‘fifth mystery’ to show that the prayers have ended. A green light tells the person where they are at any given time, but the vibrations mean it can also be used by the blind.

Despite the undoubted modernity of the contraption, its inventors say it is not meant to replace the traditional rosary. Yet “in certain cases it is more convenient, more discreet and clearly requires less concentration.” They add that “the rosary is composed of 50 ‘avemarias’ plus meditation on five scenes from the Gospels. If it is prayed every day, even to make the most of empty time - on the tube, walking, waiting at the doctor’s - in the course of a year this makes 18,250 avemarias. This turns the person into good, in the same way that water wears away stone. The rosary attracts the grace of God, through the virgin Mary, and in this way can cure undesirable addictions such as drugs, alcohol, gambling, smoking and others which cause so many problems to people and society in general.” No comment.

Evangelical Alliance calls for prayer after London bombings

London, July 13th, 2005 (ACPress.net).
The British Evangelical Alliance is calling on its members to pray for the families of those killed and injured by the multiple explosions in London and for a spirit of peace and mercy, not panic or revenge.

General Director Joel Edwards, said: "We need to pray earnestly for those who have suffered loss or injury and call on God to bind up the broken hearted. I have found Psalm 46 a great comfort at this time. " He joined the Bishop of London, the Rt Revd Richard Chartres, in saying, "This is a grave day for London. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and the bereaved and also with the Emergency Services who have responded so rapidly. London's clergy have been working alongside the Emergency Services since early this morning and churches close to affected areas have been opened for shelter, aid and prayer."

4,000 teenagers in Ecuador pledge not to have sex before marriage

Quito, July 13th, 2005 (ACPress.net).
About 4,000 teenagers in Ecuador have promised to remain virgins until marriage as part of a Christian school project launched in Guayaquil in 1998.

The project is called ‘Sex, lies and truth’, and includes testimonies about the bad experiences of premature sex, and videos about abortion. The teenagers were invited to stand and make their promise. However, not everybody took the stand, because it is something to be taken very seriously. As Rogelio, 15, one of those present, commented: “You do not play around with God, because you cannot swear to do something by Him, and then do the opposite.” 145,000 youngsters have participated in this programme since its inception.
