A digital Areopagus
MADRID, February 13, 2007 ()
The Spanish Evangelical Alliance (AEE) is clearly leading the way in the field of Spanish evangelical media, and its project 'Areopago (Areopagus) Digital' (incorporating this news agency, Protestante Digital and related Internet services) is in rude health after four years on the web. Areopago Digital (AD) itself forms part of the RedIMIR media network, which operates under the auspices of the AEE.
The different sections totalled over 700,000 visits in January, a clear sign that the Alliance's media work has begun the main reference point for those seeking news about, and from the perspective of, Spanish evangelicalism. This is especially true in a context such as Spain's, where so much false information about Protestants continues to be propagated. Another strength of this agency is the freedom given its columnists to express their opinions, and the willingness to be self-critical.
AD seeks to offer a realistic view of Spanish evangelicalism today, in all its plurality, and to counteract less accurate views which are sometimes expressed. It was founded in 2003 with the aim of offering a professional, quality news service through the services of representative figures in the Spanish Protestant world. AD also tries to present a dignified image of evangelicalism worldwide which corresponds to the real situation, without hiding its faults, but conveying news accurately and with insight.
The 'Areopagus' was where Paul debated with Greek philosophers about the truth of the Christian Gospel, and the idea of having dialogue with the culture of the day fits perfectly with the philosophy of the AEE and the AD project in particular. As well as broadcasting and publishing material in Spanish, this news agency is the only Spanish Protestant web magazine to offer a service in Catalan, and the only one which is updated weekly in English, taking current Spanish and international news round the world. The much larger English and German Evangelical Alliances have held up AD as a model to follow in Europe.
A broad range of Spanish and Latin American writers and journalists are involved in the project, producing articles and bulletins on a weekly basis, and a diversity of viewpoints is guaranteed! There are also audio and video sections, a humour page, a youth magazine, and this news agency, ACPress, which sends out its bulletins to 12,400 subscribers. Various firms and evangelical organisations support the work of AD, as the service is offered completely free of charge.
